Imagine a world where beings are transparent blobs of matter.  Their physical appearances are identical and insignificant.

In this scenario, these blobs are seated apart in a room in silence. Their minds are telekinetically able to connect based on compatibility and likeness, with a major factor being cognitive ability. Two of these blobs link up based on their eccentricities, accomplishments, and sense of adventure.

In this hypothetical world, like-minded blobs have a 100% success rate of meeting. What would be the outcome if other factors, such as age, nationality, and ethnicity morphed the physical exterior of these blobs to reflect such factors?  Would these complexities and potential differences strengthen such unions, or would they obscure compatibility based on like-mindedness? If these connections would still be made as evolved blobs, to what extent  would they be as successful in meeting others like themselves, based entirely on intellectual capacity?
